Number of cybercrimes in Belarus expected to rise

17/08/2018

According to BelTA the number of cybercrimes in Belarus will rise.

The statement was made by Vadim Ustinovich, Chief of the High-Tech Crimes Investigation Office of the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry, during a roundtable session held in the Sputnik Belarus press center on 16 August, BelTA has learned. According to the source, about 2,500 cybercrimes have been registered in Belarus so far this year while 3,099 cybercrimes were registered in 2017. This is quite a considerable increase in the relative share of information security crimes for this country, said Vadim Ustinovich. In his opinion, there are no reasons to believe the number of cybercrimes will go down. The Internal Affairs Ministry representative noted that 75% of the cybercrimes are thefts committed using computer equipment. The rest are information security crimes. Unauthorized access to computer data is the most frequent charge pressed against criminals. Mikhail Dubko, a major crimes investigator with the central office of the Investigative Committee of Belarus, noted that some 2,000-2,500 cybercrimes have been registered in Belarus every year since 2010. The number of high-tech crimes registered so far this year already exceeds the number of violent crimes such as murders, rapes, robberies, and other ones. “One can say that criminals are moving from daily life crimes to computer systems. The share of cybercrimes was as low as 5-10% in the past. Last year their share reached 25%,” specified the official. Apart from that, cybercrimes have a high degree of latency. According to various estimates, police learn about only 10% of such crimes due to various reasons. Some people fail to report the crimes to police due to various reasons. Some victims fail to recognize such crimes have affected them. The number of such incidents can go as high as hundreds of thousands per annum in Belarus, assumed Vadim Ustinovich.
