Beltelecom sets 1Q19 deadline to complete GPON switchover in Minsk

17/03/2018

According to TeleGeography state-owned PTO Beltelecom aims to complete the migration of all residential subscribers in the Belarusian capital Minsk from copper to fibre by the first quarter of 2019, according to a report in BelTA citing Eduard Belokursky, director of the Minsk City Telephone Network branch of Beltelecom.

Belokursky was speaking about the firm’s Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) network programme at a meeting in Minsk. ‘As for the multi-apartment building, in the first quarter of 2019 we plan to finish the modernisation of the entire [Minsk] network, two years ahead of the initial plans,’ he noted. The official went on to point out that fibre was available to 20,000 subscribers in 2014, but today, has increased to more than 500,000 with a target of 650,000 by the end of 2018.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in January 2018 Beltelecom published a brief update on its overall network developments in 2017, and also adopted proposals concerning its targets for the year ahead. As at 31 December 2017, the carrier had signed up 2.4 million ‘byfly’ broadband subscribers, 1.6 million IPTV (branded ‘ZALA’) users and 1.7 million business and residential GPON connections nationwide. It also commissioned and put into operation an additional 9,500km of fibre-optic lines last year. Finally, Beltelecom noted that as part of its ongoing migration to an all-IP network, it had connected 2.4 million subscribers to its IMS platform by end-2017. As part of this, the PTO decommissioned outmoded equipment in Gomel, Grodno and Mogilev, and in the Minsk City Telephone Network.
