Belarus' central bank okay with cryptocurrencies in Hi-Tech Park

24/12/2017

According to BelTA Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus (NBRB) Pavel Kallaur believes that cryptocurrencies can definitely be used in international deals of resident companies of the Hi-Tech Park.

The official made the relevant statement as he commented on the signing of the Digital Economy Development Ordinance on 22 December, BelTA has learned. The head of Belarus' central bank said: “The National Bank of the Republic of Belarus has a good attitude towards the legal means of payment we have — the national currency. When we talk about some national cryptocurrency, we see that the attitude of central banks is not exactly positive towards it. Because we are deeply convinced that only one's own legal means of payment should be used inside a specific country. As for cryptocurrencies, the Digital Economy Development Ordinance allows resident companies of the Hi-Tech Park to use cryptocurrencies for international deals. We are okay with that.” Pavel Kallaur noted that cryptocurrencies are a volatile asset, which is not very convenient for making transactions. “Some people may be interested in mining cryptocurrencies and getting results. But the price can skyrocket or plummet overnight. Those, who want to play with cryptocurrencies, are free to do so,” believes the official.
