MTS Belarus to upgrade 2G,3G networks in five regions

16/09/2016

According to TeleGeography belarusian mobile operator MTS Belarus has announced plans to upgrade its 2G and 3G networks in five regions across the country, namely Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno and Mogilev, using equipment supplied by Huawei of China.

The vendor will replace and upgrade more than 3,500 GSM and W-CDMA base transceiver stations (BTS) in all regions, excepting the capital Minsk and the surrounding region, where BTS upgrades have already been carried out. Upon completion, the cellco says that MTS Belarus subscribers will be able to access 3G in virtually every part of Belarus, while also allowing for the future migration to fourth-generation technology and IoT developments. Providing more detail, the MNO says that works will include upgrades to GSM-900, DCS-1800 and UMTS-2100 platforms, and the construction of additional 3G networks in the 900MHz band (UMTS-900) based on 2G infrastructure. In total more than 1,700 new BTS will be deployed in the country. The wide-scale works will kick off in Vitebsk, Brest and Gomel regions in October, November and December 2016, respectively, while similar work in Grodno and Mogilev regions will start next year. The pair say all work on the network should be completed by 1 August 2017.
