20/04/2016

According to BelTA Belarus supports the idea to create a new global mechanism of Internet regulation.

The issue was on the agenda of the meeting of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Houlin Zhao on 19 April, BelTA has learned.

“We are absolutely convinced that there should be no national egoism in the Internet regulation. This very important sphere should be monitored by international organizations, your organization taking into account the existing experience,” the President said. Alexander Lukashenko noted that information and communication technologies are vigorously developing in Belarus. A number of large projects have been implemented in this field in recent years. These include IPTV, raising the Internet access availability to almost 70%, the launch of the 4G technology and the Belarusian communication satellite. “All these will expand our horizons in the IT sector. We have set very ambitious tasks, especially in the development of the broadband Internet access,” the Belarusian leader said. The head of state stressed that the project to create the so-called electronic government is implemented within the framework of the de-bureaucratization process in Belarus. There is a task to promote digital economy relying on the computerization of all spheres of life of a person and the society in general. “We are ready to enhance our cooperation with the ITU to develop new communication standards. We are ready to do our best and are doing our best to eradicate gray traffic. We have already done a lot in this field,” Alexander Lukashenko assured. The President noted that the experience of China can be useful in the international regulation of the Internet development as this country has made big progress in this area. “The issues we are currently addressing are many. But this is the future. The future of our country, the future of the economy, the future of the whole world,” Alexander Lukashenko added.
