Polkomtel interested in BelCel purchase?

13/07/2011

According to TeleGeography Polish wireless network operator Polkomtel is interested in acquiring Beltelecom’s stake in Belarusian mobile company BelCel, according to a report by Belarus Telegraph Agency (BelTA). Deputy information technologies and communications minister Sergei Nesterovich was quoted as saying that the Polish company has been in discussion with his ministry since early this year. No official offers from Polkomtel have thus far been received.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database BelCel was founded in 1993 as a joint venture between local Belarusian telecom enterprises and Cable & Wireless of the UK, although today it is an equal joint venture of the Netherlands’ CIB and state-owned company Beltelecom. At the end of 2010 BelCel had a subscriber base of 132,000, including an estimated 20,000 1xEV-DO users. By the same date BelCel’s network comprised 184 base stations, 84 of which support 1xEV-DO, and 48 of which support Rev A. EV-DO coverage stood at 55.65% of the population.
