Beltelecom CEO targeting strong broadband subscriber growth

13/05/2011

According to TeleGeography Beltelecom’s incoming chief executive officer Alexander Popkov, the former director of Minsk City Telephone Network, says his company plans to expand the internet gateway to between 150Gbps and 200Gbps by the end of 2011, having completed its latest expansion – to 110Gbps – only last month. Explaining the telco’s ongoing expansion drive for 2011, Popkov told local news portal TUT ‘The decision to expand the gateway is made based on statistical load external channels. If the download reaches 70% – we are expanding the channel. During the year we will expand [the total internet gateway] channel based on monitoring data’. Based on current predictions, the figure will vary between 150Gbps-200Gbps he added.

Beltelecom is also looking to roll out around 200 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country this year, and hopes to boost the number of byfly ADSL broadband users to 1.15 million, up from the 880,000 reported at the start of this month. To help drive this, and as reported in CommsUpdate earlier this month, on 5 May the operator launched its inaugural triple-play – voice telephony, broadband and TV – package, branded ‘Universal’. The new service includes 1,500 minutes of voice calls (broken down as 1,000 local minutes, 300 regional call minutes and 200 national minutes), unlimited broadband with a maximum 1Mbps/512kbps connection and IPTV for BYR90,000 (USD30.1) per month. Beltelecom also has over 4.1 million fixed telephony subscribers, Popkov said.

Belarusian fixed line incumbent operator Beltelecom is launching its inaugural triple-play – voice telephony, broadband and TV – package from 5 May. In a press release the PTO says the new package, branded ‘Universal’, will include 1,500 minutes of voice calls (broken down as 1,000 local minutes, 300 regional call minutes and 200 national minutes), unlimited broadband with a maximum 1Mbps/512kbps connection and IPTV for BYR90,000 (USD30.1) per month. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, state-owned Beltelecom had 750,000 ADSL broadband subscribers at the end of December 2010, a market share of around 80%.
