Major tendencies of Belarusian telecommunications sector development

Belarusian Ministry of Communications and Informatization has published report on Major tendencies of Belarusian telecommunications sector development.

It was stated that according to the "Programme for telecommunications development for 2006 - 2010 " major priorities data transmission networks extension and further development of mobile phone communications

The report states some important achievements in the sphere. For instance, 67% of switching equipment in Belarus is digital. All coin-box telephones in the country allow local as well as intercity connections. Multiplexers for broadband internet access have been installed in all regional and district centres. About 40% of digital stations clients use additional telecommunications services.

At present more than 6 mln people in Belarus are mobile phone services subscribers. GSM network covers territory with more than 93% of country's population.

One of the trends of current telecommunication development is convergence of various networks into an integral information and telecommunication system. It is planned to build Metro Ethernet network. It is also planned that 80 % of exchanges will be digitalized by 2010.

In addition to technological indicators, the report includes provisions for organizational, administrative and legal measures intended for stimulating the sector's development and for creating environment which will provide favourable preconditions for Belarus's WTO entrance.

The report also describes steps necessary for 3G project development, namely allocation of frequency.
