Majority state-owned national telecoms operator Beltelecom announced it now has 3m subscribers and plans to connect about 32 per cent of the Belarusian population by 2005.

The company said it plans to set up telephone exchanges for 800,000 numbers and to connect 700 small villages over the next three years.

At present, Beltelecom has 4,000km of fiber optic lines. But by 2005, it hopes to extend that by 10,000km. The company has 16,000km of inter-city channels, about half of it fiber-optic lines and 54 per cent digital channels.

Beltelecom's data transmitting division - BelPak - expects 14,259 subscribers by March. The total capacity of its network is 1,849 ports, but that is expected to grow by 15,000 ports by 2005. Last year, the company introduced 1,200 and has plans for 2,300 more this year.
